Descriptive Statistics Calculator
This tool summarises a list of numbers and tells you which ‘typical value’ to trust. The right choice depends on the shape of your data, so it shows you that shape too.
How it works
The mean adds everything up and divides by the count. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. Quartiles split the sorted data into four parts, using the type-7 interpolation method (the default in R and Excel), and the IQR is the gap between the first and third quartiles. Spread is reported as both sample and population variance and standard deviation: sample figures divide by n−1 because you are estimating from a sample; population figures divide by n because the data is the whole group. Skewness gauges how lopsided the data is. Tukey fences, set at 1.5 × IQR, flag outliers. All math runs client-side and is verified against independently computed reference values — see Software & sources.
